White Flowers, 2022 embroidery and beadwork on stretched fabric, pyrography on wood frame. 21x11.5x2”
Duyen Nguyen is a visual artist and clothing designer. Her work synthesizes representation and abstraction in embroidered paintings and drawings where energy is made visible and characters—animal, human and plant—co-exist in spontaneous environments. Nguyen's expressionistic style, the ease with which she works various materials, and her willingness to experiment with media, foster the creation of mysterious places, and otherworldly moods. The artwork reflect her interests in beauty, folklore, and Vietnamese culture.
She is an ambitious self-taught, visionary artist originally from a cashew farm in Vung Tau Province in Vietnam. She was taught how to sew by her father as a small child and quickly became skilled in the 700-year-old tradition of Vietnamese hand embroidery.
