Cate Sampson is a ceramicist and historic process photographer based in New Orleans. A self-taught potter, Sampson makes vessels inspired by the forms, colors, and textures of the flora and fauna of South Louisiana. Be it moss laden oaks, moonlit bayous, or anhingas perched with wings outstretched, the unassuming natural world is the artist's greatest luminary. In creating pieces that mimic aspects of the natural landscape, Sampson hopes to draw attention to and advocate for the wetlands and coastal environs long impacted by our state’s complicated relationship with extractive industries.
