Diana Hoover, Frame Mug, 2024, Ceramic, wheel thrown with hand-painted underglaze and clear glaze, 3” x 6.5”

Diana Hoover (b. 1982, Fort Knox, KY) is a ceramic artist working under the studio name Knook Ceramics. She holds a BA in Psychology and English from the University of Kansas (2005) and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Louisiana State University (2011). Hoover began working in ceramics in 2014 in Houston, TX. In 2024, she will complete The Independent Study and Mentoring Program (ISM), a 3-year advanced studies program in ceramics, at The Village Potters in Asheville, NC, where she works as a studio apprentice. Upcoming shows include: “Fall Art Party” (3-person show) at Greenhouse (Asheville, NC; September 2024); “ISM Graduate Exhibition” (5-person show) at The Village Potters (Asheville, NC; October 2024); “Clay” (group show) at the Cabarrus Arts Council Galleries (Concord, NC; October, 2024); and “Too Hot to Handle” (group show) at the SOCO Gallery Shop (Charlotte, NC; November 2024). Hoover is based in Asheville, NC, where she lives with her husband and son.

Hoover enjoys experimenting with form and color and strives to make functional and sculptural ceramic objects that fit well as a cohesive collection but can also stand alone. Her inspirations include the Bauhaus, minimalist art and architecture, neo-concretism, geometric abstraction, and modern quilting. Most of her work is thrown on the wheel, and she uses a creamy white mid-range temperature clay body. Hoover conceptualizes each piece both as a vessel and a canvas. Using the technique of hard-edge painting, she paints bold lines and patterns on each bisqued form with underglaze. She wants it to be apparent that her work is made and painted by hand. Hoover appreciates how lines and patterns naturally distort when applied to the surface of a 3-dimensional and curved form, making each piece unique.
