Matt Jones, Texture of Time, 2024, Ceramic, Wheel-Thrown and Oxidation Fired, 4.25"L x 3.5"W x 4.5"H
Matt Jones is a ceramic artist living and working in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Originally from the Mountain West of Colorado, he received his Bachelor of Arts in ceramics and art education from Colorado State University. While living in Colorado Matt developed his studio practice and has exhibited nationally, while also having worked in public education and served on the boards for NEXT Gallery and the Arvada Ceramic Arts Guild. In the Spring of 2024, he received his Masters of Fine Arts in ceramics from Louisiana State University. Remaining in the art department of LSU, Matt is working as a ceramics instructor and studio technician. He is currently researching and creating a new body of work centered around wheel-thrown vessels and functional wares inspired by antique tinwares, and aging industrial architectures of the South. Using a dark, iron-rich stoneware clay, he crafts forms that allude to antique silver and tinwares he has become so fond of in the homes and antique shops he frequents. He then applies glazes that are with various metal oxides to their exterior which when fired, produce a surface which mimics the rusting and aged architectural surfaces that surround him in this southern geography.
