Richard Boehnke, Teapot, 2022, Wood-Fired Ceramic Cone 10 with Natural Ash Glaze, 8" x 6" x 7"

According to the 2024 Circularity Gap report, “in just the past six years alone we have consumed over half a trillion tonnes of materials - nearly as much as the entirety of the 20th century.” This pace of consumption makes me deeply uncomfortable. I am wrestling with the cognitive dissonance of the necessity of reducing consumption while also wanting to develop my ceramic practice. This questioning is leading me to challenge assumptions I have made regarding how to develop my work and build a career as a maker.

As a MFA candidate at Louisiana State University, I have been working with soft slabs. I love the process of darting, seeing a piece come alive from a base shape, as it is unfettered from the unused pieces of clay that are cut away. Focusing on process, not products, I have reclaimed the majority of items I have created, learning as much as I can from the making process.
