Richard Burkett, Cactus Mug 2, 2024, soda-fired stoneware, 5”H x 4”W x 5”D

After 10 years running my own studio pottery, I received the MFA from Indiana University-Bloomington with a dual focus in Ceramics & Photography in 1986. This was followed by teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for three years, then at San Diego State University, where after 30 years of teaching all levels of ceramics, I am now Professor Emeritus. Most of my work for the past 50 years has been soda or salt glazed ware. I work in both stoneware and porcelain clays. I live in the southernmost part of California, less than 20 miles from the Mexican border, and have been included in the Ogden Museums cup exhibitions in the past.

I have lectured and exhibited my work internationally, including in Finland, Sweden, Ecuador, Turkey, China, Korea, Great Britain, Ireland, and Canada. My work was included in such noted national exhibitions as the 76th Scripps College Ceramic Annual. I am currently exhibiting work through Schaller Gallery, Baroda, MI, and Plinth Gallery, Denver, CO.

I have authored several books on ceramics, including "Ceramics: A Potter's Handbook, 6th ed", and "Porcelain Masters" from Lark Books. After 25 years of doing ceramics documentary research in the Amazon basin of Ecuador with my colleague Joe Molinaro, we published “Mythical Figures and Mucawas” featuring indigenous ceramists from that area. I am also the author of HyperGlaze glaze software for ceramic artists.
