Roni Polisar, Landscape Cup, 2022, wood/soda fired stoneware, 3.5”H x 3”W

I was first exposed to ceramics as a high school student, taking coursework at the Chrysler School of Art in Norfolk, VA.  I continued coursework in ceramics each semester as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, as well as taking classes at the Antioch University College in Columbia, MD,  as I earned my degree in Art History.  After a few years’ absence from clay to earn a Master’s degree in American Material Culture Studies and then to raise a family, I returned to ceramics in earnest, taking workshops and short courses to refresh my skills while working part time as a museum specialist. I have taken workshops with Ruthanne Tudball, Kevin Crowe, Makenzie Smith and Catherine White to name a few.  I am now a juried member of the Washington Ceramic Guild, and show my work at the Torpedo Factory’s Scope Gallery in Alexandria, VA.

I work both on the wheel and with slabs and fire my work in a community wood/soda kiln.  I am drawn to quiet, earthy tones and minimally decorated surfaces, and enjoy the serendipity of wood/soda fired surface.  My pieces are cone 10 stoneware, glazed and sometimes unglazed.  I sometimes use slips to highlight surface texture.  My work is not necessarily reflective of a southern upbringing, but my love of the hot, humid days of summer is; hot enough to want to dive into the ocean and drink cold, sweetened iced tea from a tall ceramic tumbler.
