Sarah Moschel Miller, Mouth, 2024, Cone 6 Porcelain, Pinch and Press Mold, 3.5"D X 3.75"H

Sarah Moschel Miller is a ceramics-focused sculpture artist who specializes in body-centered work. Born and raised in Florida, she received her B.A. in Ceramics from Florida State University. She is currently a second year MFA candidate in Ceramics at Louisiana State University. Her work focuses on hand building techniques like pinch and coiling, as the relationship clay has to memory and touch is essential to her practice. Her functional works utilize the pinching process, along with press molds as a way to create a tenuous connection between herself and the viewer. As these exist as remnants of the body that become altered through the making process. This is pushed further by the skin-like feel and tenderness of porcelain. Her work is influenced by the Golems of Jewish folklore, seeing her works as similarly taking on precarious lives of their own. Growing up Jewish in the South informs not just the historical references in her work, but her understanding of self and bodily representation.
