The anthology is organized into three sections featuring new essays and artist projects related to the editorial themes Burnaway has explored this year: Exurbs and the Rural, Waterways / Water Wars, and States of Leisure. A fourth section, A Journal of the Plague Year, contains reflections on a year marked by loss, isolation, uprisings, and unrest.
Features include a longform profile of photographer and filmmaker RaMell Ross, a photo-essay by 2020 Guggenheim Fellow Stacy Kranitz, and an oral history of the Free Southern Theater featuring Dr. Doris Derby and Kalamu ya Salaam. Artists Sasha Wortzel and Rev. Houston Cypress report from the Everglades, New Orleans-based artist Keni Anwar embarks upon a journey of love in a print-exclusive artist project, and curators from across the South spotlight five of the region’s most exciting emerging artists
