Susan Carranza, DELTA DIRT, 2022, slab built clay collage with stains and underglazes, 3" x 3 1/2"
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, I graduated from Louisiana State University in Fine Arts, where I concentrated on printmaking. While working as an art therapist in Washington D.C. I studied advanced printmaking and design.
After a move to New Orleans I extended my studies to work in bookmaking and paper making, with a strong use of collage. My love of collage led me to the fusion of clay, glass and found objects.
In 2000 I moved to Ocean Springs, Ms. and set us a ceramic studio, teaching art and working as an art therapist. I continued exploring all the possibilities of clay and I am most happy than when I am in my studio playing with clay.
My cups are always slab built, using low fire clay. I use many techniques; watercolor and chalk underglazes, gold, colored slips, and wax resist. Lately I have been exploring the use of decals.
My work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in South Mississippi, New Orleans , Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.
