After earning a BFA from Loyola University in 1992, I opened Potsalot Pottery with my wife in New Orleans.  We designed our claybody for color, workability, and firing density, intending to make the everyday a work of art.  I create primarily on the wheel, but also with slabs and handbuilding. The act of altering pieces allows for the hand to show its marks.  Every cup is made knowing that there is nothing more intimate than pressing one’s lips to the edge to drink. Great care is taken to ensure the act is fluid.  I gently bevel the lip of the cup so it does not feel too thick or thin on the lips and to allow the liquid to flow easily. The condensation on the outside gathers in the low spots keeping the fingers dry on the high points.  The facets encourage rotation of the vessel to observe all sides, and to allow for better grip of the cup regardless of hand size. The beaded glaze adds a softness to the form and texture to engage the mind.  In the South where iced tea is a staple, here is a vessel to think about while trying to cool down.
I grew up in Memphis and followed the Mississippi down river to continue my life in the South in New Orleans. The river has been a constant throughout my entire life, rolling through it, changing, depositing and taking away each season.
