Hell Cup, 2026, Sgraffito'd terracotta, cone 04, 4" x 4" x 6"
I was born and raised in rural North Alabama, in a small farming community in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. My family was (and continues to be) very spiritual , and my very happy childhood playing in those woods and creeks and attending several of the local summer church camps dramatically shaped the type of artwork I make today.
In 2001, my younger brother passed away in an automobile accident when he was 19 (I was 23 at the time, and in college). Since having my son, I have been interested in how the imagery of puberty (monsters, science fiction, dinosaurs) connects my son to the uncle he never got to know.
I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Montevallo, and went on to earn my MFA in ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Today, I work in my home studio on the outskirts of Athens, AL, on the same farm where I grew up. My work is a combination of sgraffito'd terracotta and fritware.
