Pequeños encuentros II (no details given)

Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores identity, belonging, displacement, and transformation. She earned a BFA in Sculpture with a minor in Psychology from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio Art from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, where she currently serves as Visiting Assistant Professor of Sculpture.
Through sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and installation, Ruvalcaba Cruz creates a visual language that exists between discomfort and beauty, the familiar and the unknown. Her process combines hand-building, moldmaking, casting, and mixed-media construction, allowing material, form, and process to become integral parts of the narrative. By merging and manipulating the human form with elements from the natural world, she creates hybrid figures and environments where the tangible and imagined coexist.
At the heart of her work lies a central question: How do we find a sense of belonging while continually moving between identities and places? Human-tree figures, shells, ravens, roots, nests, and floating islands give physical form to experiences of transformation, exile, displacement, and uprootedness. Shaped by dreams, Surrealism, Magical Realism, and her Mexican heritage, her narratives occupy a middle ground where identity remains fluid and layered.
Her connection to the American South has developed through almost a decade of living, studying, teaching, and making art in South Texas. San Antonio and Corpus Christi have become significant points within her personal and creative geography. Living near the U.S.–Mexico borderlands and along the Texas Gulf Coast has shaped her understanding of cultural intersections, migration, landscape, and home, reinforcing her interest in places defined by movement, adaptation, and transformation.
