Mark Derby is a ceramic artist living and working in New Orleans since 1995. . Originally from California he holds a masters degree from CSU Long Beach. He has owned and operated Derby Pottery and Tile for the past 26 years, a production studio specializing in historic reproduction tile. Professionally, He has held teaching positions at Tulane University and Louisiana State University. Grants and Awards include Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Louisiana Division of the Arts. Derby was an Artist in residence in Oregon at the Sitka Center for the Arts, and The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. Derbys work is in both private and public collections and has been exhibited nationally. His current work is focusing on the simplicity within nature, and primal relations with it's elements. Fired in an anagama wood kiln, this piece is a result of fire blown ash on unglazed porcelain. Derby's adopted home of New Orleans has been an intricate part of his daily artistic practice.
