My name is Naomi Choi and I’m a ceramic artist working in Houston, TX. Since growing up in NYC, spending my 20's-30's in the SF Bay Area, and landing in Houston by way of my former career as a university professor of political philosophy, teaching yoga and working with clay is where I have found my ease and personal alignment.
My work uses clay as my medium to explore the question of my existence and our need, collectively, to cohabitate in society as interpretive beings. I use glaze and surface decoration techniques to translate my life experiences into the vessels I create. My creations are profoundly shaped by the multiple landscapes that I have called “home,” and the disparate worlds that I have learned to navigate, not only as an immigrant to the US but also as a transplant assimilating to the Deep South when I lived in Prattville and Birmingham AL while I was a professor at the University of Alabama (2010-2015) and since relocating to Houston in 2015, which lies at the strange nexus of the West, the MidWest, and the South.
