This stoneware cup is a dedication to my life with my partner, who grew up in New Orleans and with whom I moved here with in 2021. It is a recreation of our kitchen in miniature. When I considered the presence of ceramics, and more specifically, cups in my life, what first came to mind was the weekend mornings spent with my partner in our kitchen drinking coffee. We often change the mugs we drink from, some I've made, some made by other artists or even by my mother who is also a ceramicist. Above all, I wanted to capture the feeling of those mornings, and set it in stone. It is part of what has made me feel most at home here in New Orleans the last 4 years, and that morning ritual is now forever preserved. I was further inspired by the poem "Under the Waterfall" by Thomas Hardy, about the vessel from which two lovers shared a glass of wine. Below is an excerpt from a poem I wrote titled "Could I fit my whole world in a cup?" in response to the art call for a cup, followed by an excerpt from Hardy's poem.

"I don’t want to be your first love,
I want to be your last love.
you’re standing in the kitchen making coffee
and I wonder
could I fit my whole world in a cup?
could I hold it all in my two hands?"

"By night, by day, when it shines or lours,
There lies intact that chalice of ours,
And it's presence adds to the rhyme of love,
Persistently sung by the fall above.
No lip has touched it since his and mine
In turns therefrom sipped lover's wine."
