Victoria Rosenblatt is a multi-disciplinary visual artist and designer. She lives and works in New Orleans. Born in NYC in 1955, she studied painting, sculpture, ceramics and weaving at the Brooklyn Museum Art School beginning in 1970. Her decision to study textiles stemmed from her training as a painter and her fascination with traditional methods of spinning, natural dyeing and weaving yarn. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, she went on to a successful career in the home textiles industry, designing collections for top fabric, wallcovering, bedding and bath manufacturers. Since retiring in 2018 she has circled back to making art full-time, primarily focused on ceramics. She has had a fascination bordering on obsession with tableware going back nearly forty years, when she began traveling to Europe regularly and was exposed to “the art of the table.” These remarkable objects made her imagine how life would change if she could eat breakfast out of a fabulous handmade porcelain bowl. Her practice gradually morphed from making dinnerware to hand building vessels inspired by the grace and resilience of New Orleans’ live oaks and its lush, subtropical gardens. These cups are inspired by the Roman god Janus, whose two faces represent differing points of view and Argus, the hundred-eyed guard who never sleeps. They are made with slabs, pulled handles and appliqué features. Victoria sees ceramics as trial by fire. “There are so many ways ceramics can break your heart” she says about the unpredictability of the medium “but there is no limit to the joy I feel when a finished piece speaks to me.”
